"One doesn’t walk away from The Drift with a favorite track, but with a memory for repeated phrases that have been painstakingly beaten into consciousness: “I’m the only one left alive”, “I’ll punch a donkey in the streets of Galloway”, “World about to end”."
iTunes review of Scott Walker’s The Drift. As much as I try, I can’t do it, I can’t like Scott Walker’s later material. With two exceptions, it sounds like a terribly depressed person making demos to try to be the Phantom of The Opera in some new weirder shittier ALW musical. Every time I try to listen to this stuff, I get about three seconds in before my eyes involuntarily make huge circles. Is the joke on me? Am I missing something? Because this guy has before, and therefore is capable of making great songs.
