Central Park -> Manhattan Airport
“Public dollars helped create Central Park in the 1850s. And public responsibility dictates that we transform this underutilized asset into something we so desperately need today. Manhattan Airport will prove New York City no longer allows it’s vestigial prewar cityscape to languish in irrelevance but instead reinvents these spaces with a daring and inspired bravado truly befitting one of the world’s great cities. The moment is now.”
— The Manhattan Airport Foundation

Maybe I’m missing something here, but isn’t this an absolutely catastrophic idea? Isn’t it commonly understood that the ecology of Central Park is what keeps all of the carbon dioxide created by the rest of Manhattan at bay? Wouldn’t scraping all of that away in order to elevate flight delays be absolutely ignorant? Without Central Park’s oxygen generation and psychological benefits, would Manhattan be able to effectively support human life, much less be a place human beings want to go?

My thoughts exactly. Central Park is an iconic and peaceful setting against the harsh metropolis of Manhattan and the psychological as well as physical effects of removing it altogether would be damaging for all living things. The logistics of this plan could only be lesser than or equal to the sum of FAIL. One of the reasons New York City is so charming is due in no small part to the fact that these 800+ acres serve as a refuge in contrast to the concrete machine that surrounds them, and it’s an aesthetically pleasing sight to have those two variants of beauty together on such a tiny island.
And although I am confident this is satirical, if at any time in the future this ludicrous plan should ever come to frution I would never go to New York City again.

You’re both crazy!  Don’t you see it?!  Airports ARE cities now.  This image represents the first stage in a term I’ve just coined: Urban Flippy-Flop.  It’s an inverse metropolitan execution of my outside-in fetish.  They’re also building DOWN instead of up, that way people can enjoy views of the forest and sea.  The first stage is to tear down central park for the new city.  Then they’ll doze what you see around it, and turn all that into park/forest.  They’ll trade 1.32 sq mi for 26.64 of park!  Also, if I might take this opportunity to link you to some of the other landscapes of Olmsted
